Do I need a credit card to use iTunes?

Answer: iTunes is a free software program, distributed by Apple Computer, that allows you to organize and play music files. It is also used to transfer songs to the iPod, Apple's popular portable music player. Using the program to import songs, create playlists, and transfer music to the iPod is completely free.

The only reason you would need a credit card for iTunes is to buy songs from the iTunes Music Store. The Music Store is integrated into the iTunes program and provides an interface to browse and search through all the songs available in Apple's iTunes library. Each song costs $0.99 and full albums are typically $9.99. These songs can be downloaded to your computer and played through iTunes or on your iPod. However, to download songs, you must first set up an account, which means you will be asked to enter a credit card.

If you don't have a credit card, you can still purchase music from the iTunes Music Store. You just need buy a prepaid iTunes Gift Certificate or Gift Card online or at an Apple retail store.
