Encoding used for e-mail messages and attachments that include 8-bit data or other characters besides the standard US character set; supports 8-bit content instead of the normal 7-bit messages normally sent via e-mail.

MIME files may either appear as part of the e-mail message or may show up as a separate attachment; often decoded automatically by e-mail programs, otherwise may be decoded using a separate decoding utility.
