Bitmap image format developed by Truevision (now Pinnacle Systems) in 1984 for use with its first video products; new extensions to the TGA file were introduced by Truevision in 1989 to accommodate the needs of graphics industry professionals.
Examples of the extra extensions include:
- A scaled-down postage stamp copy of the image (a "thumbnail" image)
- Date and time the file was created
- Author name and comments
- Gamma value
- Pixel aspect ratio
- Alpha channel type
TGA files are also often used for storing texture files referenced by 3D video games.
