Acronym Explosion!
February 7, 2006 — by Per Christensson
In my February 2nd update, I said I would be adding a new feature to Sharpened.net by the end of the month. Well, how about by the end of the week! In less than five days, I have already finished the development of the new feature. Even I'm a little surprised.
So what is the new addition? Well, about a week ago, I realized just how large the list of Chat Acronyms had grown. What used to be a collection of just a few dozen acronyms had grown into over 430 during the last few years. So the Chat Acronyms page had gotten a little bit, er, way, too long.
Many years ago, I created the first database table for Sharpened.net with the computer glossary terms and definitions I had written. A few months later, I did the same thing with the Editor Updates. Then I added a database of Quotes and Jokes, which are displayed on various pages throughout the site. Next came the database of questions and answers for the Help Center and, just last year, I added the database of File Extensions. So, today, I am introducing a database of Chat Acronyms!
This addition is pretty special because over 90% of the entries in the Chat Acronyms database are from Sharpened.net visitors. That means, without your suggestions and feedback, this new feature would not be possible. So, thanks to all of you who have suggested new acronyms and given me other suggestions over the years. Now, you can view the new Acronyms Page and let me know what you think!
