Keep Your Workspace Active

September 2019 — Tip of the Month

Most work-related aches and pains are caused by not moving enough. Our bodies were made to be active, not sedentary. While sitting in a chair all day might seem harmless, it can cause a number of physical problems. Fortunately, these problems are avoidable, but you have to be active to avoid them.

Below are a few techniques that can help you keep your workspace active.

  1. Use a timer or smartwatch to remind you to stand up and walk around every hour.
  2. Use an adjustable desk or standing desk and change the height a few times each day.
  3. Use multiple monitors, which will help you turn your head and neck while working.
  4. Intentionally place commonly used objects, like your coffee mug or file cabinet out of reach, forcing you to move around more.
  5. Keep active equipment, like a balance ball, yoga mat, and small weights near your desk, which can be used for a quick break.

Small changes like these can go a long way in helping (maybe even forcing) you to move around more. Even small movements and mild activity at work can help you avoid neck and back pain. So before the aches and pains set in, be proactive about being active!
