Xfinity Internet Speeds Over 2 Gbps
July 26, 2024 — by Per Christensson
I received a text message from Xfinity today saying they were working on fixing an issue with my Internet service. Apparently, that was code language for "completing a service upgrade." I ran a speed test this afternoon and saw download speeds above 2 Gbps (2,000 Mbps) for the first time ever.
Download: 2334.05 Mbps
Upload: 357.56 Mbps
These speeds are almost double what I was getting before the upgrade. If you're wondering how download speeds over 2 Gbps are possible via cable Internet, a few things are required:
- Gigabit Internet service via Xfinity or another provider
- Modem that supports speeds over 1 Gbps (DOCSIS 3.1 or higher)
- Computer that supports 10-gigabit Ethernet (Gigabit Ethernet isn't enough)
- Cat6 or higher Ethernet cable (Cat 5e isn't enough)
If your setup checks all the boxes, 2 Gbps download speeds are now possible. The upload speed is just as important, which is pretty solid at 357 Mbps — almost 10x the old 40 Mbps limit. It allows my online backups to complete much faster, reducing those random slowdowns during my work day.
I'm curious — is anyone else (in the US or internationally) getting Internet speeds above 2 Gbps?
