Use a Wired Connection
May 2025 — Tip of the Month
In a world of wireless signals, wired connections (like Ethernet) are often overlooked. But when portability isn't an issue, a wired connection is best.
Wireless transmissions are susceptible to interference from both physical barriers and other signals. An Ethernet cable ensures a consistent connection with minimal signal fluctuations. It's especially helpful for real-time Internet activities, such as video conferencing, gaming, and streaming.
If your router has extra Ethernet ports, use them! Connect your desktop computer, smart TV, and other stationary devices via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. You'll maintain a consistent network connection and won't need to reenter your credentials when you change your wireless network name (SSID) or password.
Travelers's tip: I bring an Ethernet cable when I travel so I can connect to the hotel's wired network if available. The connection is often faster and more reliable than the hotel's Wi-Fi.
