Don't Get Fooled By AI Fakes

June 2026 — Tip of the Month

A few years ago, it was still pretty easy to tell the difference between real photos and videos and those created with artificial intelligence. That's no longer the case. Chances are you've been tricked at least once by something that looked real but was actually created by AI.

It's getting harder to tell what's real and what's not, especially on social media. Here's how you can stay savvy:

  • Double-check the source: Before sharing or believing a shocking post, look at who posted it and where it's from. Don't automatically trust accounts you haven't seen before.
  • Look for odd details: AI-generated images or videos often have minor mistakes — strange hands, off-looking faces, or unusual backgrounds.
  • Use reverse image search: Tools like Google Images can help you see where a photo or video has appeared before — and if it's been flagged as fake.
  • Be wary of sensational claims: If something sounds too wild to be true, it probably is! Fact-check posts before reacting or sharing.

Man trying to distinguish between real and fake ai-generated photos online

In some cases, it can be difficult to tell whether an entire social media account is real or AI-generated. On platforms like Facebook and Instagram, some accounts may use AI-generated photos, fake bios, and automated posts. Check for signs of authenticity, such as personal posts, interactions with real friends, and a consistent posting history. If an account seems too perfect or generic, it might not be genuine.

Being AI-aware is an important skill in 2026. Remember to check the source of online content and don't believe everything you see, hear, and read online.
