Happy 23rd Birthday, PC.net!

May 14, 2022 — by Per Christensson

Happy 23rd Birthday, PC.net!Twenty-three. In website years, PC.net is roughly 207 years old. I'm not sure how many websites have lasted twenty-three years without getting acquired, merging with another company, or simply fading away. But somehow, PC.net hit its twenty-third milestone today.

To be fair, "PC.net" is technically just over 11 years old, since the website was Sharpened.net until May 1, 2012. But the name change was simply a rebranding, and most of the website content remained the same. In fact, the last major redesign of the website was 13 years ago in 2010.

I suppose that's another notable stat — 13 years without a redesign. I remember using cutting-edge HTML5 and CSS 3 to redesign the site in 2010. The process was both exciting and overwhelming since so much of it was new to me. It was also the first time I coded a site completely from scratch. I haven't used a WYSIWYG editor since.

PC.net has evolved over the past two decades, but its overall purpose has remained the same. The original Sharpened.net motto sums it up:

"Sharpening your knowledge of computers and the Internet."

Looking Forward

Like the website, my interests and priorities have evolved, leaving me with less time to spend updating PC.net in recent years. There are countless articles I wanted to write, but other projects took priority. For example, I never got around to publishing the article about 2/22/22 (like I did for 11/11/11. It's a little late to celebrate that mathematically significant day now. =P But wait — here is the screenshot I took at 2:22:22 that day, so it doesn't go to waste.

2:22:22 on 2/2/22

Twenty-three years is a good run — and it's not over. But I have realized that I can't maintain PC.net as I did in the early years. For PC.net to continue — and be successful — I cannot remain the sole author of the website. Over the next few months, I plan to refocus the website and bring on additional help to make the PC.net better than I could ever make it on my own. So stay tuned for some exciting updates in 2022!
