A cache file stores recently accessed data in a temporary file on the hard disk. By saving data to a disk cache, programs can access frequently used data more quickly.

Various programs, including Web browsers, image editors, and audio recording applications use cache files. Since they only store data temporarily, cache files are often deleted automatically when the program is closed.
